Gig Harbor mountaineer Luther Jerstad (1936–1998) reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 22, 1963 with Barry Bishop and saw this: “Just then we came over the last rise and there was that American flag — and what a fantastic sight! That great big flag whipping in the breeze, and the ends were tattered.” Learn how that flag got there.

Marty Hoey (1951 – May 15, 1982) a female from Gig Harbor would have been the first women to summit in 1982.  Hear what happened during her ascent on that Spring day.

See artifacts from the climbers on display.
