Dragon Boat racing has become very popular in our little harbor town- and what a perfect place for it!
Last Saturday March 17th at Skansie Park, two new 10-person dragon boats in an ancient Chinese “Awakening” ceremony, were awakened. Christened were Tiamat (owned by Jennifer Vullo O’Hare) and Imua. The rite included 3 ceremonial stages: the meditative or stimulating breathing stage, waving burning/ smoky sage and painting of the dragon eyes.
“Three years ago we didn’t have a boat, we didn’t have paddlers and we didn’t have a team,” said Al Abbott, coach of the Gig Harbor Dragons and now three years later we have three boats, lots of paddlers and a big team. Being able to take out three boats at a time is going to be fantastic.”
Ron Roark, managing director of Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard, purchased the first boat (it will be named in a future ceremony, said team president Sharon Shaffer).
